Storfjord Hotel is a certified green hotel and a proud member of the Eco-Lighthouse organization.
Sustainability is one of our core values. For us, it is not only about caring for the nature that surrounds us, but also about the people who work here and the local community we are a part of. Our Eco-Lighthouse certification, a Norwegian environmental management program approved by the EU Commission, provides clear guidelines for how we manage resources, reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and ensure responsible operations.
Our staff is central to everything we do. We focus on safe working conditions, opportunities for professional development and an inclusive environment where different backgrounds and experiences are valued.
We also work to be a good neighbor. We source from local suppliers, collaborate with nearby farms and donate surplus bread to be used as animal feed. We support local sports teams, cultural initiatives and community events that help strengthen the social fabric of our village. In this way, we contribute to keeping value and resources in the local area.
Sustainability is an ongoing effort for us. It reflects how we care for nature, how we support our people and how we give back to the place we call home.
Environment
Responsible use supports a lasting future for generations to come.
We work every day to take care of the nature that surrounds us. The hotel is built using traditional log construction with a sod roof to minimize our impact on the environment. Sod provides natural insulation with high thermal mass and effective moisture regulation, which reduces energy consumption throughout the year and contributes to a stable indoor climate. In addition, sod roofs store carbon over time, support biodiversity, and allow the building to blend into the surrounding landscape both visually and ecologically.
Much of our work is about using resources in a way that feels right both for our guests and for the surroundings we are part of. We have chosen to minimize single-use plastic both our rooms and restaurant, and we use LED lighting throughout the hotel.
Our kitchen places special emphasis on local ingredients and the changing seasons. We order produce based on the number of guests we expect, allowing us to reduce food waste and ensure that what we serve is fresh and of high quality. Since we are located in a region with access to excellent local products, this naturally plays an important role in our menu. We also use herbs and vegetables from our own garden and greenhouse.
We know how important bees are to the ecosystem. That is why we have our own beehives here at Glomset. The hives produce our very own Storfjord honey, which our chefs often use in soups, sauces, and baked goods. You will also find it on the breakfast buffet.
Local community
Storfjord Hotel is located in the small village of Glomset, home to only a few hundred people. We take great responsibility in supporting local businesses and events in the area.
One of the main organizations we support financially is Storfjordens Venner- Friends of Storfjorden. This is a charitable group made up of dedicated locals who work to preserve the old fjord farms found along the hillsides of the beautiful Storfjord, the fjord that gave the hotel its name. These historic buildings carry a rich cultural heritage, and preserving them for future generations is something we are passionate about.
Education is also important to us in our small community. Apprentices are warmly welcomed, and we regularly host students from local upper secondary schools who wish to gain experience in various fields. We are proud to say that we have trained chefs, restaurant service professionals, and receptionists here at Storfjord Hotel.
Our people
The daily work environment is essential in any workplace. As a small business with around 30 employees, Storfjord Hotel places great importance on creating a positive atmosphere and well-being among our staff. Our philosophy is simple – happy employees make happy guests.
As part of our well-being initiatives, the hotel offers all employees membership at the local gym. We are also surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes, and we are always happy to share our best hiking tips with our guests. Our staff know the area well and can recommend excellent routes for hiking, running, and cycling.
